I used to feel the same way about a cute little nurse from Toledo--and then my hospital insurance ran out.--Lee Crane

In a funeral parlor, several men and a woman open a coffin; the man inside sits up and says it isn't a good fit. The woman, Anna, is worried; she suggests that they start on their way now, but the man in the coffin, Anton Koslow, will only go with Admiral Nelson whenever he gets there. Finally, Nelson and Crane arrive. Koslow's intended defection to the United States has put him in danger, thus the coffin ruse. Nelson, Crane and Anna leave the parlor, planning to meet Koslow nearby, and the remaining men load Koslow's coffin into a truck; as the truck pulls away, a man steps out of a doorway and shoots at it, killing the driver. Anna ducks into a doorway, and Nelson and Crane go to the truck and drive off with Koslow.

On the Seaview, Nelson and Crane, approaching sick bay, discuss the recent events; Anna escaped and remains on shore, but Koslow was injured in the attack and is unconscious in sick bay. They enter, and the doctor tells them he is unsure of Koslow's chances--he lost a lot of blood, but is strong and stubborn.

Nelson radios Washington with the news of Koslow's injury. They send a man, Parker, to Djakarta to rendezvous with the Seaview; Parker is to debrief Koslow on the way to the United States, as they cannot risk him dying before he is able to pass on his information--information about the southeast Asian red spy network.

In a corridor, a man fights three crewmen in succession and defeats them all. A uniformed man enters and checks on the last one, who is dead. It was a training exercise for Victor, the man who defeated the others. The officer, Colonel Lasco, comments on the death to Victor, who replies that it's better to weed out the incompetents now rather than in the field. Lasco tells Victor that they need his special talents to take care of Koslow. Victor smiles.

Parker's plane lands at Djakarta. He exits the plane, walks up to a uniformed chauffer, and asks him for a light; the man offers him a matchbook, which Parker returns to him with one match folded over, thus identifying himself to the driver. Parker enters the car and the driver turns--it's Victor. They drive a while, and he asks Parker if he'd care for some music; when Parker says he would, Victor reaches for the controls. Parker looks startled and falls forward; two blades can be seen sticking out from the back seat.

Victor drives to where the Seaview is to meet Parker, shows Crane and Jones Parker's identification, identifies himself as Parker, and boards.

On the Seaview, Victor wonders when he can start to debrief Koslow; Nelson says that the sedative should be wearing off soon, but first they go to the control room, where Nelson sends a coded message to Washington. Victor says that if the message is to Washington, Nelson should tell them that he (Parker) is on board and that he still hasn't debriefed Koslow. Nelson adds the message.

In the sick bay, Nelson asks the doctor about Koslow; the doctor says he'll know better when the sedative wears off. Nelson tells the doctor that Victor needs to question Koslow as soon as he wakes up; when the doctor insists that the effort of debriefing will kill Koslow, Victor insists that the information is more important than Koslow's life. Nelson directs the doctor to tell Victor as soon as Koslow is awake.

Nelson is in his office; Crane knocks on the door--Koslow is awake and wants to see the two of them.

In sick bay, Koslow is agitated; he has just learned that Anna is not aboard the Seaview. Nelson tries to assure him that she will be safe with him gone, but he says that she is still in danger because of her association with him. He insists that they go back for her, and refuses to give any information until she is on board. They had a secret hiding place, where she is sure to be. Nelson orders the ship to turn back.

Back on shore, Nelson enters the building Koslow specified, opens a door and starts to search the room. When he opens a wardrobe, a man with a knife jumps out and attacks him. They struggle, and Nelson pins him, holding the knife to his throat until he tells him where Anna is. He tells Nelson and is about to escape when Nelson knocks him out. He goes to the place Anna is staying, wakes her, and tells her that Koslow won't leave without her. Back at the first building, the man who attacked Nelson wakes up and finds his wrists tied, but manages to make a phone call to Colonel Lasco. Meanwhile, Nelson and Anna climb out the window, run to Nelson's car, and make their escape.

On the Seaview, Anna climbs down the ladder, She immediately asks about Koslow, and Crane tells her he is doing better than expected. She wants to see him right away, but Nelson recommends that she rest first, and then they'll check with the doctor; he shows her out of the control room.

Victor has acquired some keys; he tries several until he finds the right one and enters Nelson's quarters. He finds and reads a set of blueprints, returns them, and goes to his quarters, where he uses a hidden radio to call Colonel Lasco. Lasco says that Koslow must be silenced, but that Victor is also valuable to them; Victor assures him that he has planned his escape route.

Victor goes to the sick bay, but is stopped at the door by a guard who insists that it's off limits to everyone. He goes to Nelson to complain; Nelson and Crane say that of course he is an exception to the guard's order, and that there must have been a misunderstanding. Crane accompanies him back to sick bay, chews the guard out, and tells Victor to go on in. He enters and sees Koslow lying on a bed. He smiles, advances, and hears a noise--Anna is in the room, caring for Koslow. He comments that she must have been up all night, and offers to watch Koslow while she rests. She turns down his offer, saying that she owes Koslow much and losing a few nights of sleep is little enough to repay him. Victor leaves the room, and Anna puts a cloth on Koslow's forehead and sits by the bed.

Later, Crane is talking to Koslow, who asks where Anna is, saying that she wouldn't leave him. Crane says that she refused to leave until she knew someone would be there with him. Koslow says that it is rare to find a girl like Anna, and that they can surely understand why he insisted on returning for her.

Anna is in the observation nose with Nelson; he orders her to relax, offering her coffee. Anna says he is very kind, but she must get back to Koslow. Nelson tells her he'll be fine, the doctor is with him. As they talk, Victor starts down the ladder, sees that Anna is there, and goes back up without being noticed.

In sick bay, the doctor changes Koslow's bandages and tells him he'll be back in an hour. Victor sees the doctor leave, and goes to the door. He tells the guard he's sorry about getting him into trouble earlier, but the guard seems unimpressed with the apology. Victor enters the room and is greeted by Koslow, who says it must be time for his debriefing. As he talks, Victor takes a towel and pulls it taut, moving toward Koslow; just then, Crane calls him to the radio shack over the intercom. The guard enters the room to make sure Victor heard the page, and Victor leaves.

In the radio shack, there is an urgent message for Parker from Washington. Victor takes the message, and as he talks the men in Washington realize he isn't Parker. While Victor talks on the radio, Washington sends a teletype message to the Seaview. When he realizes that Nelson and Crane know he's an imposter, Victor runs off, taking a guard's gun. He fights several crewmembers and escapes into a large air duct. The crew searches for him but with no luck.

Crane goes to Anna's room, asking if she has seen Parker. She hasn't and wants to know why he's asking; he tells her that all they know is that Parker isn't who he claims to be. Her first thought is of Koslow, and Crane takes her to sick bay.

In the control room, Crane enters; there is still no sign of Victor. Nelson realizes that there's only one other place he could be--the ventilator system. The crew begins to search it. Victor knocks out the first crewmember he sees in the ducts, but more men are entering the system, including Crane. Eventually Victor finds his way to the duct overlooking sick bay. He watches as Anna pulls a small cylinder from her skirt hem and fills a hypodermic needle from it. She is about to shoot Koslow with it when he wakes; they struggle as she shouts "The party comes first! Death to the defectors!" Victor enters the room through the vent, takes the needle from her and is about to give Koslow the shot when Nelson enters with several guards. Anna acts as if she's trying to defend Koslow from Victor, and the guards take him away, leaving her with Koslow. She refills the hypodermic needle and prepares to inject Koslow with it. Meanwhile, Crane has reached the ventilator duct near sick bay, and watches her, shocked. He draws his gun and shoots the needle, jumping down into the room. Anna tries to escape, but he grabs her and she can't get away.

Later, Koslow joins Nelson and Crane in the observation nose. "Double agents, triple agents, where does it all end?" he wonders aloud. "That's what you're going to tell us," Nelson replies.
