I don't know how it works, but it's immobilized the Seaview and it's going to destroy it unless we do something pretty fast.--Lee Crane

Looking into the sky, General Gamal wonders aloud about the U2 spy planes that fly over his country daily. He orders a mysterious weapon aimed at the plane, saying that this is a historic moment--from now on, his country will control the Red Sea. Suddenly, an armed man runs into the room, saying that Gamal's plan is likely to start World War III, and attempts to shoot the general. However, his gun won't work--it has been affected by the magnetic field of Gamal's weapon, which makes any steel machinery useless. Gamal aims the weapon at the plane, which crashes into the countryside.

On the Seaview, Nelson gives Crane last-minute instructions for his mission ashore; he is to contact a man called Richmond, who will put him in touch with the underground. He's to find out what has happened to the U2 planes that have crashed here. Morton comes into the room with scanning and detection reports--no weapons have been found, and yet the planes keep disappearing.

Gamal and Major Amadi are discussing the Seaview's presence; Gamal is concerned that it will upset their timetable. Amadi disagrees--the Magnus Beam is invulnerable to attack in these caverns, the only entrance to which is undersea, too deep for any submarine to enter. Except, says Gamal, for the Seaview. He makes Amadi responsible for dealing with the sub, giving him a free hand to act as he sees fit.

Crane arrives on shore. Richmond, in robes, meets him; he has fake indentification papers for Crane, and asks if he knows how to get to town, as he can only guide him to the main road. He believes the authorities may be on to him, and it would be unsafe for him to accompany Crane further. Once in town, Crane must find a nightclub called the Golden Parrot and ask for a singer named--suddenly, Richmond is shot, before giving Crane the crucial piece of information. Crane takes Richmond's robes and leaves. In the background, the sniper aims his rifle again but is stopped by a uniformed man.

In town, Crane is attacked by several men; a robed stranger helps him--he turns, and we see it's Major Amadi. He says he'll help Crane avoid the secret police. When Crane asks why, he says that not everyone here dislikes Americans. Amadi leads Crane to the Golden Parrot. As they arrive, a car pulls up and Amadi quickly sends Crane up the side stairs. The driver exits the car and goes to Amadi, who tells him that the bait has been taken and Crane is theirs.

Crane looks down at the stage. The singer, Juana, finishes her act and goes up the stairs, meeting Crane on the way. He identifies himself as Jerry Richmond, and she asks him into her dressing room. Once there, she asks him what happened to Richmond; when he tells her, she realizes that the authorities know about the underground. Crane tells her who he really is and asks if she will help him find the underground; she is unsure, and he is unable to offer her proof of his identity. Even so, she seems willing; she asks if he was followed--he doesn't think so. She tells him that the weapon is hidden in the cliffs along the coast, and that it seems to use some sort of magnetic force. She doens't know how to find it, but she knows someone who may be able to help. Just then, Amadi opens the door and steps inside. Crane says he's the man who saved his life, but Juana recognizes him immediately as General Gamal's chief of security. Amadi, however, requests asylum on the Seaview; when Crane wonders how he knows about it, he points out that he is the head of the secret police. He says that the Seaview can destroy Gamal's weapon with two missiles, and offers to show them how. Crane is unwilling to take Amadi to the Seaview, but Juana tells him he must--Amadi knows about them and their plans. She tells Crane to take Amadi to the Seaview, while she sets up a meeting with the man who can help him reach the weapon.

Amadi, blindfolded, is brought onto the Seaview. Crane returns to town, and Juana brings him to Abdul Azziz, the curio dealer. Crane enters the shop first, planning to signal Juana when he knows it's safe. A man greets him--it is not, however, Abdul Azziz. He rings a bell, and although Crane tries to escape he is stopped and beaten by uniformed men.

On the Seaview, Nelson has found the fissure leading into the undersea caverns, the only possible entrance, since the land approaches are fortified. Amadi has offered to lead the Seaview against Gamal's weapon in exchange for asylum. Nelson asks Amadi whether the Seaview will fit in the passage; when Amadi affirms that it will, he asks how they managed to measure the passage when none of their submarines are capable of reaching those depths. Amadi replies that they did it from the surface. After he leaves, Nelson and Morton agree that there is no way to measure the passage other than physically--if Amadi had said they had used a diving bell, they might have believed him, but now they know not to trust him.

As they approach the fissure, Nelson orders Patterson, who has been guarding Amadi, to keep him in the missile room, where he will join them. As he enters, Amadi says that by now he should have used the minisub to show them the fissure. Nelson, untrusting, is tempted to call the whole thing off when he receives a message, reads it, and asks Amadi what he has done with Crane. Amadi insists he knows nothing about it, Nelson insists that he does, when suddenly the lights dim, the missiles swing in their racks, and small metal objects start flying off tables. The intercom system is out. All the hatches are jammed. Nelson asks Amadi what weapon is being used on them, but Amadi says nothing. Patterson pulls a gun on him, and Nelson gives him five seconds to talk. Amadi tells Patterson to go ahead and fire--the gun won't work. Nothing made of steel will. Nelson says he understands why Amadi was so anxious to get away on the minisub. Now, he and the Seaview's crew are all dead men.

Back in town, Juana goes to Abdul Azziz at his cousin's home; his own home is being watched by the police, who tapped his phone--that's how they learned about his planned meeting with Crane. He may, however, still be able to help her find and rescue Crane.

On the Seaview, the depth gauge is moving (its needle isn't metal); the sub is rising. Tbe Magnus Beam is pulling them up slowly, and will crush it against the cavern ceiling.

In the caverns, Crane is beaten by guards and thrown to the ground at Gamal's feet. Gamal tells him the Seaview will be destroyed by the Magnus Beam, but he hasn't decided yet whether to crush the ship or simply let the men suffocate. He says that if Crane will tell him about his underground contact, the Seaview might be saved. Crane, of course, won't talk, and Gamal orders the inspector to have him taken away and shot. As he is led through the caverns, Abdul Azziz steps out behind the guards and strangles them. When the inspector reaches a cell door with Crane and asks a guard for the key, he realizes the guards are no longer there; while he is distracted, Crane knocks him out, then collapses himself. Juana and Azziz rescue him, but he won't leave until the Seaview is saved.

The Seaview is still rising. Jones notes that they are at a depth where they could safely use scuba gear--except that they cannot open the doors.

In the caverns, a guard passes Crane's party and they grab him, taking his non-steel gun. They look through the cave opening into the large cavern where the Magnus Beam is kept, and wonder how they can stop it before it destroys the Seaview. Abdul Azziz goes to get his cousins, who will help.

On the Seaview, Nelson asks Jones to bring him a roll of copper wire and some battery jumpers. They pull the minisub out, open its canopy, and remove the batteries. Amadi, watching the activity, says there's nothing they can do; Nelson says he wouldn't bet on it, and gets to work.

In the caverns, Crane and Juana wait; eventually Azziz returns with news of his cousins' arrival--and dynamite to use on the Magnus Beam.

On the Seaview, Nelson is juryrigging something. He thinks he can open the hatch, just for a minute. Amadi asks to go along, saying he can arrange an honorable surrender for him. Nelson is unimpressed with this offer.

In the caverns, Gamal is visiting the site; they know now that Crane has escaped and are tightening security. He says they have waited too long--he intends to use the beam to crush the Seaview immediately.

On the Seaview, Nelson and his party prepare to go out in scuba gear, with aluminum spearguns that will be immune to the beam's effects.

In the caverns, the search for Crane goes on. Crane, Juana and Azziz move out of the way, but have left a stick of dynamite on the ground. Fortunately the passing guards don't look down. Finally Azziz' cousins arrive. Crane suggests that they need a diversion, offering to create one himself--they can't wait where they are, they'll be found and slaughtered. Juana says not to.

On the Seaview, Nelson says they will have 90 seconds to open the door and get out; the batteries can only neutralize the beam's effects for that long. As Patterson operates the makeshift device and they open the hatch, Amadi lunges at Patterson, who knocks him out. They open the hatch again and are gone.

In the cavern, Gamal notes that the Seaview will be crushed in two minutes. Just then, Nelson's diving party arrives and emerges from the water. They pull a guard from a catwalk into the water. Crane says that this is the diversion they need. Explosives are attached to the weapon. Gamal notices that the guard is not at his post, and his men start to shoot at the divers. Crane, Azziz and the cousins rush out; a fight follows, during which Azziz shoots Gamal. All take cover as the weapon explodes.

Back on the Seaview, Amadi again requests asylum; his request, however, is denied. He'll be put ashore--where, says Juana, the new government should give him an interesting trial.
