Although Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea ran for four years, there was so little information given on any of the characters (not atypical for shows of that genre and era) that we know little more about any of them at the end of the fourth season than we did at the beginning of the first.
However, if you pay close attention, you can find occasional glimpses into many of the characters' personal lives. So, what is it that we do know about the Seaview's crew?
Admiral Harriman Nelson
- Once commanded a navy sub, the old Nautilus. ("Eleven Days to Zero")
- He has a sister, Edith ("The Traitor") and no other living relatives.
- One of his ancestors was a sea captain who dealt in the slave trade.
- He smokes (at least during the first season of the show).
- He is allergic to cortisone. ("Mutiny")
- He apparently speaks Russian, since he was able to successfully go undercover, in Russia, as a Russian sailor ("Time Bomb"). However, at other times ("The Cyborg") he has relied on Kowalski to translate.
Captain Lee Crane
- Was considered the Navy's best submarine officer ("Eleven Days to Zero")
- On his first naval sub duty he served under Nelson on the Nautilus ("Eleven Days to Zero")
- Was the intercollegiate middleweight boxing champion. ("Eleven Days to Zero")
- He became interested in the sea as a child after reading a book on the subject, written by Bentley Falk Sr., a "dozen times." ("The Condemned")
- Known relatives: Mother ("The Traitor")
- He plays golf. ("The Traitor")
- He "took care of" Carol Denning for nine months after her fiance was lost at sea ("Turn Back the Clock").
- He used to date a nurse from Toledo. ("No Way Out")
Chip Morton
- He plays golf. ("The Traitor")
- He doesn't care for modern music. ("Escape from Venice")
Chief Curly Jones
- He was one of the best divers on the ship. ("Eleven Days to Zero")
- He was never married (because he hates to wait!) ("The Mist of Silence")
Chief Francis Sharkey
- His first name is Francis ("Time Bomb") but he doesn't appear to care for it, and was quite embarassed when Katie called him by it in front of the men.
- He grew up on New York's Lower East Side
- In high school, the only class he ever got an A in was home ec, specifically cooking.
- He keeps a little black book.
Kowalski
- He has a brother, Stan, in the Navy--a deep diver. No other relatives known.
- He's known among the crew as an inveterate girl-watcher.
- He can speak Russian. ("The Cyborg")
- He has a AA security rating ("Hot Line")
Patterson
- Has the safest job on board the Seaview, working in the compartment where the escape belts are kept. ("The Fear-makers") (Note: This certainly wasn't Patterson's only duty, as we see him all over the ship in subsequent episodes.)
- His late father was a television cameraman. No other relatives known.
Stu Riley
- Speaks in surfer slang, since he is a surfer. ("Jonah and the Whale")
- Can write music. ("Escape from Venice")
- Plays cards, along with other crewmembers, who appear to be avid enough to hold tournaments of acey-deucey. ("And Five of Us Are Left")
Doc
- No personal information known.
Sparks
- No personal information known.
Clark
- His wife and kids live in San Francisco. ("Hot Line")
- Has a large family--wife, two kids, mother, father, couple of brothers, couple of sisters. ("Mutiny")
